‘I am naturally very inquisitive’

Joshua Hagen

Joshua Hagen couldn’t have wished for a better learning experience. Freshly graduated as a bachelor in construction engineering, he joined BAM Bouw en Techniek as a planner in February 2018. After ten months at the tender office in Bunnik, he was able to join the team of the Zalmhaven project in Rotterdam. ‘A unique and fascinating project. I still get that buzz every morning I step into the site office.’

Trust

The Zalmhaven project involves the construction of a residential tower that will stand 215 metres tall flanked by two shorter towers and a plinth containing 33 family homes and a parking garage with roof garden.

As a planner on this project, Joshua is mostly involved with the lower towers and the plinth. ‘A lot of this is new to me. I am naturally very inquisitive and sometimes have to put a curb on my enthusiasm. Construction began in October, so after a phase with mostly paperwork, we are now seeing actual building work. It’s been good to see how the project team grew in the course of those first few months and how people learned to trust each other.’

Feedback

‘I am the type of person who will ask his colleagues a lot of questions. What’s happening? What problems do you run into? I try to proactively learn as much as I can from them, and in the process make it clear to them what I’m working on. It gives me confidence and I learn a lot from it, just like I do from the feedback from the project leader who coaches me.’

A calming influence

Joshua likes his daily tasks as repetitive as possible, as he puts it. ‘I like to think this can have a calming influence, both on myself and the people around me. Repetition is not the same thing as routine, by the way. Routine doesn’t get you anywhere. I like to make the most of the autonomy I’m given here. I’m not easily satisfied, and I hope above all to keep getting better at managing my time and the expectations of my colleagues.’

Busy years

Joshua is enjoying his work on the Zalmhaven project. ‘First of all because it’s a perfect fusion of the construction and technology disciplines. But also because of the combination of residential and commercial building. I look forward to a couple more busy years.’
