‘Promote a positive safety culture’
Jim Kennedy is Senior Environmental, Health & Safety Officer on the New Children’s Hospital project in Dublin. ‘Similar to all of our safety professionals across the world, my role is not only to advise, support and assist all staff on issues relating to their health and safety and the environment, but also to promote a positive safety culture on site. Health and safety is not just about engineering or science, nor is it about policing, serving or training. It is about all of the above and more. For me, it is also about communication, motivation and building healthy relationships in the workplace.’
‘Proud of my work’
‘I believe that I can make a difference to peoples appreciation of safety. So, when a colleague tells me that I have helped them, or that I have made a difference to the way they think about safety, this makes me proud of my work.
On the Microsoft One project a subcontractor thanked me for my assistance during his twelve-month period on the project. He informed me that as a direct result of our interactions he could seek accreditation with the CIF’s ‘Safe-T-Cert’ system which acknowledges safe systems in the workplace.’
‘On a personal level my ambition in life is the same as any other parent. To witness my children grow up, fall in love and achieve their goals in life. Professionally, I would like to think I have made a difference in the area of health and safety in the workplace. And maybe one day I could win the lotto and retire in Wicklow, the garden of Ireland.’
