Bajes Quarter

The Netherlands

Bajes Kwartier is the redevelopment of the former grounds of Bijlmer prison into a green, sustainable residential district. The total number of 1,350 homes will include affordable starter homes as well as exclusive dwellings and care homes, with 30% of homes realised as part of a social housing scheme. In addition, the project focuses on other functionality such as a design cluster, bars and restaurants and a healthcare centre. All buildings will be fully energy neutral. Circularity is one of the key values of the design. Five of the six former prison towers will be demolished and 98% of their materials will be reclaimed and recycled.
