Extension of museum de Fundatie

The Netherlands

Housed in the former court of justice at the edge of Zwolle’s historical centre, museum de Fundatie had run out of space for its exhibitions, collections and the growing number of visitors. Bierman Henket architects provided the design for the elliptic extension on top of the existing building.

The extension comprises two exhibition rooms, with a total floor space of almost 1,000m². A large oval window offers a view of the city’s historical centre. The ellipse’s exterior is cladded with 55,000 white and blue ceramic tiles, giving it the impression of floating like a ceramic cloud above the neo-classicist building below.
