N211 – first CO2 negative road

The Netherlands

The N211, connecting The Hague and the Westland agricultural area, is set to be the world’s first CO2 negative road, meaning that during a major rehabilitation more CO2 will be captured than released. The project plan includes no less than 21 sustainability measures, including local storage of energy from the road’s surface in a hot and cold storage system. Many objects by the roadside, such as lampposts and bus shelters, will generate their own energy. Materials from the old road will be re-used where possible and any new materials will be selected for maximum reusability.
