The clear structure of the newly built university hospital in Ulm consists of two main parts, the widely stretching podium and a separate wing that would almost seem to hover above it. Inside the podium is the functional part of the hospital, with operating theatres, intensive care unit, radiology and other specialist departments, separated by green exterior spaces. The building’s eye-catcher is the three-storey patient ward wing. Also comprised in the project is a separate building for lecture rooms. An underground transport system provides a circular connection between the hospital and the nearby care centre.
